Pierre Fire Department Gives Scholarships (Pierre, SD) – The members of the Pierre Fire Department,
Inc. gave three scholarships to Pierre youth at an awards program held May 6,
2003 in the Riggs High School Theatre. An award of five hundred dollars was presented to Lindsey
Friez. Two awards of two hundred fifty dollars each were presented to Sandra
Voller and Jenna L. Schiefelbein. Awards are based on several
criteria including volunteer participation in the community. Chief Tam Gatje, in making the presentation, said, “On
behalf of the volunteers of the Pierre Fire Department, I am honored to present
three scholarships to outstanding graduating Riggs students for their volunteer
activities in the community.” The purpose of the PFD scholarship is to recognize and honor community volunteer service by a graduating senior; to emphasize the worth of individual involvement in community service; and, to encourage student volunteerism in the community and as a lifetime activity. Awards could go to Riggs students planning to attend either in-state or out-of-state schools. Funds for the scholarships are provided by fund-raising
activities of the department with none coming from tax rolls. Most fund raising
is done in a once a year door-to-door canvas of the city’s residential
neighborhoods. The award is designed to reward students who have been active in
various volunteer groups in the city. Pierre is the capitol city of South Dakota with a population of about 13,000 people and operates entirely with a volunteer fire department. |
