Fund-raising for
the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department is undergoing a change this year.
Ian Paul, second assistant chief, said that there are two parts to the annual
fund-raiser.
“The first part will be conducted by raffle,” said Paul. “The raffle is
for a $2,000 vacation package of the winner’s choice.”
Firefighters are selling the chances for $10 each. Chances can also be purchased
by contacting a member of the fire department or by stopping by No. 1 Fire
Station, 215 W. Dakota Ave., during working hours.
The winner of the raffle will be announced during Fire Safety Week on Oct. 14.
The second part of the annual fund-raiser will be a mass mailing to the citizens
of the city asking for donations. The letters will go out in late September.
Paul said there were a number of reasons for changing from the familiar visit by
the firefighters.
“The biggest reason is that the town is growing and it is difficult to get out
to all areas and meet with local residents,” said Paul.
“Firefighters will still be holding an open house and other special events
during fire prevention week if residents have questions or want to visit with
them.”
The theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Use Candles with Care.” It will be
held the week of Oct. 9-15.
