For more than a hundred years the Pierre Fire Department has operated under volunteer management. That’s about to change as the city of Pierre has hired its first paid fire chief.

William Alexander has accepted the position and hopes to start by Nov. 1.

“I’m really excited about this,” said Alexander, currently a fire chief in Cheyenne, Wyo.

“It’s a real opportunity for the city of Pierre and, of course, an opportunity for me.”

Alexander
is a retired member of the U.S. Air Force, having served for more than 20 years. He said that he has training and on-duty experience in a variety of fire situations from fighting structure fires to dealing with hazmat incidents. In the military, he rose through the ranks, retiring as a deputy fire chief.

Originally from Ohio, Alexander is married to Dena Alexander. They have three dogs and a cat.
