The Pierre Fire Department accepted the
resignation of one of its first women members.
Tamara Darnall has resigned after serving 6.5 years with the department to
pursue a doctoral degree. Darnall is a chief budget analyst with the Bureau of
Finance for the state of South Dakota.
Darnall also served on the Pierre Rural Fire Department which covers the western
third of Hughes County. She served with that unit for the past four years.
Darnall, using her expertise, served as the department’s treasurer for the
past five years.
“Tami did a great job of atomizing the bookkeeping system of the department
and was never late in producing the financial reports to the board of
directors,” said Pierre Fire Chief Greg Baker.
Baker said that while Darnall is retiring from firefighting and bookkeeping,
there are four new members of the department.
Nathan Gough, Brandon Fleagle, Paul Kenefick-Aschoff and Heath Harter have
joined the department.
Gough is an 18-year-old Riggs High School senior who joined Engine Company 3.
Fleagle is a service technician for Pepsi-Cola and is assigned to Engine Company
4.
Kenefick-Aschoff works at the Ramkota RiverCentre and owns a catering business.
He is also assigned to Engine Company 4.
A mechanic at Beck Motors, Harter is assigned to Engine Company 2.
There are currently 60 members of the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department. Baker
said that he urges anyone interested in joining to contact any firefighter or
call the department’s headquarters at 773-7401.
