A fire left heavy heat and smoke damage in a house in the 100 block of South Polk Avenue.

According to Pierre Fire Chief Greg Baker, the home belongs to Bob Nystrom. There was no one in the house when it caught fire. It was a neighbor who noticed smoke coming from the house and alerted the fire department.

“The most damage occurred in the den area on the north side of the house,” said Baker. “There was a little in the kitchen that’s
just adjacent to the den area.”

The cause of the fire, verified by the state fire marshal’s office, was a electrical short in a lamp in the den area. Baker said that the fire was not suspicious and that the only reason the fire marshal investigated was that he was in town.

“He just checked it out,” said Baker.

There was one injury though it was not related to the fire. Fireman Mike Remick injured his knee while he was working the front door—keeping a check on each fireman inside the house. He twisted his knee and was taken to St. Mary’s Healthcare Center where he was treated and released.
