Pierre Fire Department seeks grant By
LETA NOLAN CHILDERS According to fire administrator Tom Kurtenbach, the grant would pay for several necessities for the department, including— •Fire alarms for No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 Fire Stations. At present, those fire stations have no fire alarms. The systems would cost $68,907. •A new fire repeater. When radios are used to communicate, the signals are transmitted to a repeater that relays the transmission and sends it to other radios on the same frequency. According to Kurtenbach, the repeater currently used by the department is about 20 years old and replacement parts are becoming difficult to obtain. The cost of a new repeater and accessories needed would cost $20,156. •Sixty-nine sets of new bunker gear at $1,635 each, including coat and pants, hood, gloves, boots, suspenders and helmet. The total cost would be $112,815. •A dump tank costing $1,450. The portable tank can be assembled at the site of a fire and holds up to 2,000 gallons of water. This allows the department to use trucks to ferry water to the site while firemen are using the water in the tank to fight the fire. •Equipment and supplies for the mass casualty unit. This would cost $13,479. “This grant is a 95/5 match,” said Kurtenbach. “The city’s share would be $10,939.” When asked, Kurtenbach said that the money hadn’t been budgeted for this year and if the city received the grant, the budget might have to be supplemented. He said there was also a chance that the city’s share wouldn’t come due until the next budget year. There is also the possibility, according to Kurtenbach, that the application could be modified and not all those things requested be funded. The commission approved the application unanimously.
