A Pierre man
was flown to
Sioux Falls
as a precaution for injuries and burns he received in an early morning fire.
Todd Holzworth, 44, was treated at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center for burns and
cuts to his hands before he was airlifted, according to Pierre Fire Chief Greg
Baker. Holzworth’s injuries are not life-threatening, Baker said.
“He woke up and couldn’t see his hands in front of his face,” said Baker. “He
broke out the window and dove out of the trailer house. Then he ran around to
the front and tried to pull things out of the house.”
Baker said that the cause of the fire at 413 E. Fifth St. was most likely a
wood-burning stove.
Pierre police officers were first on the scene,
according to Baker. Quickly assessing the situation, the police evacuated two
trailers on each side of the burning trailer.
When the fire department arrived moments later, the flames from the fire had
already burst through the roof and fully engulfed the trailer. Firemen worked to
save the adjoining trailer houses while others attacked the fire, containing it
quickly. According to Baker, the firemen then worked the remains over,
extinguishing all of the small fires and burning embers.
“The crew did a great job,” said Baker, referring to the firefighters.
The trailer was totally destroyed by the quick moving fire and there was one
fatality--Holzworth’s dog.
“It was found in the end of the trailer opposite where the fire started,” said
Baker. “The firefighters were able to recover its body.”
