Sunday kicks off nationwide Fire Prevention Week, and the Pierre Fire Department is hosting a week's worth of events to help raise awareness about fire safety.

The fun will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday with public open house celebrations at each of the Pierre fire stations. The department members will visit with guests, offer rides in fire trucks and provide free refreshments and snacks for children and adults. Also on Sunday, around 4

p.m., the department will announce the winner of this year's essay competition, "Why I would make a good junior fire marshal."

A local elementary student will receive the title and accompany firefighters to several other events planned during national Fire Prevention Week.

On Tuesday, Pierre firefighters will be visiting area schools to teach children more about fire safety and prevention.

Another public event is scheduled for Thursday, which includes more chances to talk with firefighters, captains and chiefs about their jobs and get tips about being safe. Officers from other areas of public safety will also be on hand to answer questions, including law enforcement officers and emergency medical technicians.

A fallen firefighters memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 15 at Capitol Lake as a culmination of the importance of Fire Prevention Week.
