The Pierre Fire and Rescue squad was called out, late Sunday afternoon to help two boaters who were in distress.

Around 4:35 p.m., a report was phoned in to dispatch that a boat on the main channel of the Missouri River, about halfway between Farm Island and the Pierre marina, had hit something and was filling with water.

A few minutes later, another call was received, this time from one of the men in the boat, saying it was "sinking fast."

Two rescue boats and a personal watercraft were deployed in the rescue. By the time they reached the sinking vessel, it was only an inch above water, according to reports from witnesses.

According to assistant fire chief Greg Baker, the Crestliner boat must have hit some sort of debris in the water that tore a hole in the boat.

As the boat was sinking, the driver was able to manuever it toward shallower water near a sandbar, which kept the watercraft from sinking entirely.

The two men in the boat had water marks half-way up to their knees when they were brought to shore by the rescue boat. No one was injured in the incident.
