Traffic was completely diverted around the St. Charles Hotel in downtown Pierre around 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

According to Curt Kusler, building manager, a leak in the elevator holding tank caused a fire in the basement of the building.

"The people upstairs noticed smoke in the basement and called me around 5 p.m.," Kusler said. "It's a good thing they noticed it. I guess Lonnie, the owner of the restaurant, came and put it out with a fire extinguisher. It had leaked onto the motor, but we shut it off, so right now they are just ventilating the area."

The fire department responded to the scene around 5:15 p.m., and police blocked off the area from all four ways while fireman worked to secure the area.

Streets in the area were reopened around 6:20 p.m.
