Pierre Fire Department Assists Community Hockey Program

Outside the Expo Center(Pierre, SD) – March 17, 2003 – Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) of the Pierre Fire Department worked to assist the Pierre-Fort Pierre Hockey Association carry out the Varsity Girls Hockey tournament at the Expo Center in Fort Pierre. The tournament was held on March 14 – 16, 2003.

Pierre firefighters that are trained as EMTs provided medical standby for several hockey games held at the Expo Center recently. This was an opportunity for the Department’s EMTs to hone their skills while providing a service to a local youth organization. What a sharp-looking group!

The firefighters, working in teams of two, were available to assist the girls if medical problems developed. They provided the first medical assistance to the players in the event of an injury. They kept a close eye on the games from the sidelines so they could immediately react to any injuries. Firefighters involved were: Patrick Snyder, Ryan Collins, Shelley Roemmich, Brandi Stahlecker, Loren Shoop, and Dave Ruhl.

Firefighter Ryan Collins said, “We welcome this opportunity to help the youth in the area. This is EMT's On "Stand-By" something that benefits the community and helps us keep our skills sharp.” A number of Pierre firefighters recently completed their EMT training. This enables them to provide immediate medical life safety services on the fire ground for firefighters or people involved in emergency situations.

Pierre is the capitol city of South Dakota with a population of about 13,000 people and operates entirely with a volunteer fire department. The department has an ISO rating of 3, the same rating as Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
