Pierre Members Attend
SD Instructor Conference
(Pierre, SD) - January 20, 2003 – Several members of the Pierre Fire
Department attended the 2003 Fire Service Instructors Conference held at the
Pierre Ramkota this past weekend.
The conference is intended to teach instructors new skills
and present information on specific classes so they can take that information
back to their local departments. This year’s conference highlighted two
features in the fire service.
The first is the Incident Command System (ICS) used to
control both large and small events that emergency service organizations such as
police, fire and ambulance respond to regularly. This system allows the on-scene
units to expand or contract as necessary to handle the incident as is grows and
subsequently reduces in size. This class was a “Train-The-Trainer” class
designed as a hand off course from the National Fire Academy. People that
completed the course are able to teach the ICS system to other personnel.
Attending this course from Pierre were Doug Hinkle, Cory Hoffrogge,
Tam Gatje, Russ Hendrix, Jason Roggow, and Mike
Roemmich..
The second was Training Operations for Small Departments.
This shows attendees how to set up training in small departments in such
a way that the training is both effective and efficient. Attending this course
from Pierre was Greg Baker. Course attendance was limited to one per department.
A vendor was on hand from Plankinton, SD that had available
a number of fire service related texts for purchase. This provides attendees a
source of material that is difficult to find in general bookstores.
