Department Called to Apartment House

(Pierre, SD) – The Pierre Fire Department was called to a reported fire in an apartment building shortly after 7:00 am Saturday morning, May 11, 2002.

A 911 call reported smoke in the building at 404 S. Roberts.  First arriving units found a partial evacuation prompted by smoke alarms sounding in the hallway.  The initial entry was made by a team equipped with bunker gear and self-contained breathing apparatus.

In the involved apartment they found a child on the floor, possibly overcome by smoke.  The child and other residents were removed to fresh air.  The mother and two children had been in the apartment during the incident.

An American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance that was standing by at the scene for firefighter safety was called into service to transport the occupants to St. Mary’s Hospital to be checked for possible problems from smoke inhalation.

The entry team found some very overcooked meat that had been reduced to cinders in a frying pan.  The apartment occupant had put some food in a pan and fallen asleep while waiting for it to cook.

Crews used a fan to clear smoke from the building before turning it back to the owner and occupants.

People are reminded they should continually monitor any cooking appliance while it is in use.

The Pierre Fire Department is a totally volunteer department serving the capital city of South Dakota.
