Department Presents Activities
at Kids Safe Saturday
(Pierre, SD) – June 1, 2002 – The Pierre Fire
Department was active relaying the message of fire safety to area children and
adults this Saturday.
Bruce Even, a member of the department, and his dog
Buckwheat were on hand during the Kids Safe Saturday at the Discovery Center in
Pierre.
They
gave kids the opportunity to pet Buckwheat, a most friendly Dalmatian dog, to
sit in and look over a fire pumper truck and to learn a bit about fire safety.
There were handouts of fire safety coloring books, tattoos and stickers.
There was a very good turnout of area children who went
through the various displays at the Discovery Center. The fire display was quite
popular as Buckwheat demonstrated the “stop, drop and roll” procedure
everyone should be familiar with in case their clothing should catch fire. This
could happen in many ways such as cooking or working with appliances.
Area parents are urged to teach their children fire safe
ways to prevent tragedies from occurring in their family. In addition to stop,
drop and roll, they should be taught not to play with matches and the proper use
of calling 911. Children are many
times instrumental in calling for assistance when a parent or bystander needs
emergency assistance.
The Pierre Fire Department is a totally volunteer fire
department serving the capital city of South Dakota.
