Pierre Fire Department Gives Scholarships (Pierre, SD) – Pierre Fire Department, Inc. gave three scholarships to Pierre youth at an awards program held May 7, 2002 in the Riggs High School Theatre. Two awards of two hundred fifty dollars each were presented
to Heidi Hinesh and Brian Templeton. An award of five hundred dollars was
presented to Dakota Bixler. Awards are based on several criteria including
volunteer participation in the community. Acting Second Assistant Chief Tam Gatje, in making the
presentation, said, “On behalf of the volunteers of the Pierre Fire Department
I am honored to present three scholarships to outstanding graduating Riggs
students for their volunteer activities in the community.” In a change from previous years, awards could go to Riggs
students planning to attend either in-state or out-of-state schools. Previously
awards were only given to those attending schools in South Dakota. Funds for the scholarships are provided by fund-raising
activities of the department with none coming from city tax rolls. Most fund
raising is done in a once a year door to door canvas of the city’s residential
neighborhoods. The award is designed to reward students who have been active in
various volunteer groups in the city. Pierre is the capitol city of South Dakota with a population of about 13,000 people and operates entirely with a volunteer fire department. |
